About Us

Welcome to our website!

IACAII was born in early 1970s with a small group of friends coming together to celebrate various festivities. This helped them stay connected with their roots, maintain their rich Indian heritage and educate children about their culture. As the numbers grew, this informal group of friends became an informal association and then a formalised association which is known today as the Indian Australian Cultural Association of Illawarra, Inc. (IACAII).

Each year, more and more people call Australia home. As of 2021, with approximately 785,000 people declaring Indian ancestry, India is now the second biggest source of migrants to Australia. Our community continues to grow South of Sydney as well. This is well recognised by the communities across the country with more and more local councils and governments encouraging and actively participating in our festivities especially Deepavali. The year 2022 will always be marked as a milestone in this regard with first ever celebration of Deepavali by His Excellency the Governor-General and Mrs Linda Hurley at his home, the Government House, Canberra.
